...It’s called a ‘70.3’ because that is the amount of miles covered: a 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim, a 56-mile (90 km) bike ride, and a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) run. These distances (113 km total) are exactly half of a full Ironman (140.6 miles or 226 km). Hence, the Ironman 70.3 is also called a ‘half-Iron’. Between the three of us, I was the only one to have completed a full Ironman. Somehow, though, the other two (one from Bangalore, the other from Mumbai, and I myself came over from Delhi) seemed far more confident than I did. I was anxious because I hadn’t trained. Since completing the full Ironman in Chattanooga in September 2016, I had swum only twice: once for 30 minutes in a lap pool; once in the ocean just that morning. To leap into the Persian Gulf at 7:00am the next morning with no training over the last 3 months would be an act of brazen folly. Nor had I been on an actual bicycle lately. ...TOI on Feb. 20, 2017, 11:08 p.m.
