...The spectre of naming and listing is upon us. Although this is not the first time that names of prominent people have featured in connection with sexual harm at the workplace, but this time it has hit a raw nerve. It has got us asking questions like, why this naming through Facebook posts, hashtags and crowdsourcing? Why can’t women simply register complaints within the existing legal-juridical procedures that have been institutionalised over the ages? Because women have found a common platform, to collectively break their silence over the sexual hurt accumulated over the years. Social media and hashtags have given women a platform and assurance of anonymity, to also help undo the larger silence that holds together a culture of denial while also exposing the unbridgeable power discrepancy between the students and teachers. ...TOI on Nov. 18, 2017, 11:51 a.m.
