...For 9 p.m. No? Then for 10 p.m. This is an excerpt from Aneesha Baig's chapter in a new book about NDTV and 25 years of television journalism, called More News is Good News. Order your copy on Amazon now. These requests were mocked, soundly. The Big B would speak when he had to. They knew. Then the press conference got over and Mr Bachchan left the stage and walked straight towards me. I, through serendipity and a sudden desperate need for the restroom, was standing squarely in his path. He swung an arm around my shoulders and said, 'Come on, madam, time for the interviews.' Opportunity hadn't knocked, it had blown up the door. In turn and in some trepidation, I suggested that since our OB set-up was right there, would he consider starting there. He stopped, looked astounded at the impudence, turned to Amar Singh (still a friend then) who chuckled thickly and said (thank goodness), 'Why not?' ...

...All I know is that a few days ago, Kangana Ranaut in a compelling interview with Barkha Dutt on NDTV said a bunch of truly terrific things. Yes, she was referring to the current saga playing around her, but she didn't have much to say about her "silly ex" or indeed anyone else. She talked mostly about herself. And what she said was that she will not be shamed. She had said it before, when the first murmurs around the pictures she may or may not have sent to the account that may or may not be Hrithik's were circulated. "I am not ashamed of anything, not my past, not my affairs, not my body and most definitely not my desire. So 'slut-shaming' won't work either. "The relief: no coy denials, no crying morphed or hacked, just a reiteration that the choice, any choice, is her's to make. ...

...I am even reduced to using a term like fan-girl. And I have Twinkle Khanna to blame for it. The good news is I am not alone- I think everyone who was attending the launch of her book Mrs Funnybones would agree. If they didn't arrive that way, they probably left at least a little enchanted. Because here's the other thing - the reasons we fan-girl Twinkle are so great. It's not because she looks a million bucks (and she does), it's not because of the man she's aligned to (though that, admittedly, would be understandable), it's not because of clothes, song, dance - it's because here, finally, is someone to the manor born, a Bollywood blue blood who's cool enough, secure enough to say: thanks but no thanks. Someone bright enough to reinvent herself completely. Twinkle Khanna has been a rage from her very first column-funny, insightful, ballsy, wry and dry. She's proved that nothing is sacred - not her mother, not her mother-in-law, not the man of her house, not even menstruation. ...

...It's part of a tour and he has chosen to come to India. All this is told to me with a sort of weighty voice, capitalized emphasis and pregnant pauses, so the impact carries through. Armin Van Buuren has Chosen to Come to India. Be amazed! Which I would have been had I the faintest clue who he was. So I call up a friend and colleague, close to my age and I was told that he is in fact a BFD. Also that Avicii is actually much better. Now who the heck is Avicii? More googling... and it turns out he's a 25-year-old music sensation whom the teens and tweens are just wild for. Some more research and I discover names like Madeon, Zedd and Foxes. One of them is 20. Which is when I have my moment of revelation - I have been working about as long as some of them have been alive. And that's when it hit me: I am officially on the wrong side of the age line. I'm...old? At least to these young professionals. And I just want to know how the hell that happened? ...

...It took me an alarming amount of time to set myself up with laptop and Wi-Fi. I still don't own a tablet of any kind. And it took years for me to sign up to social media. Where, I have remained that lowest form (after trolls) of social networker: the lurker. Yes, that's me. Sitting quiet, observing and only occasionally responding. On Facebook I inbox and on Twitter only occasionally respond to a direct query or comment. I don't even have an Instagram account. My notifications are so few that it can be weeks before I get a new one.So, imagine my horror when I suddenly found myself hauled out of the shadows with a notification icon that had never seen that much action. I was being trolled. Yes! It's taken me that long. That's the good news. The bad news is for all the platitudes I've passed on to other recipients, I couldn't have known how horrid it actually is. And mine was for a fashion review. A. Fashion. ...

...Some of it is just natural instinctive window shopping into the lives of the rich and famous, some of it is because we're armchair experts (of the laziest kind) and some of it is pure and simple schadenfreude. There is nothing we like more than a fashion stumble or few - especially when the whole world is watching. And to that end, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has, more than anyone else, provided incredible fodder for smirks and asides. Poor thing. In her defence, she was the first off the mark and really didn't know any better. And however much was made of her early years, and there was lots of it, to her credit she has had come a long way. She has put the ghosts of Neeta Lulla's pink confections and white cutaways behind her. In the last couple of years, she dazzled: she was incandescent in Cavalli - white, strapless and sweeping or gold, strapless with a mermaid train; in Gucci - black, sultry, lace laden; in Armani - shimmering, with her favourite accessory on her arm. ...
