...The original INS Kalvari was decommissioned a few years ago but its reincarnation will rejoin the Indian Navy on December 14, when the Navy is formally expected to commission the first French-designed Scorpene-class submarine (built by Mazagaon Docks Limited, Mumbai) as INS Kalvari, in the presence of the Prime Minister. Henceforth, five indigenous Scorpene-class subs will join the Navy, at the rate of one every year. ...

...The day after she was appointed, an even before taking charge officially, the new Raksha Mantri was briefed at her residence by the three service chiefs while outgoing defence minister Arun Jaitley flew to Tokyo for a pre-arranged meeting with his Japanese counterpart. ...

...While numerous articles and comments have appeared in the media, with experts predicting war, I don’t think war between these two nuclear armed nations is likely at least till December, when the winter sets in. China is not ready for war. On February 1, 2016, China carried out a massive reorganisation of its military by replacing its existing seven regional military commands with five new joint theatre commands (eastern, southern, western, northern and central commands). ...

...All this at a time when disturbing media reports indicate that a bankrupt American Westinghouse (owned by Toshiba) is still trying to sell six civilian nuclear reactors to India, and the US is trying to get Pakistani help in extricating its forces from Afghanistan, is now expected to “rehyphenate” Pakistan with India by offering it a similar “nuclear deal”, and India’s open wooing of the US since 2006 has alienated our age-old strategic partner Russia, who is now selling arms to Pakistan, supported China’s “one belt, one road (OBOR)”, at a time when tensions are rising further with Pakistan sentencing Kulbhushan Jadhav to death for “spying”. ...

...are a major cause for worry, this article deals with four critical items for the Indian Navy, which have very serious implications on our sea-going combat capability, at a time when Pakistan and China are rapidly building up their naval capabilities in our backyard, the Indian Ocean. China has established a maritime base in Djibouti and is expected to set up naval-cum-airbases in its funded and built ports in Gwadar (Pakistan) and Hambantota (Sri Lanka). Chinese warships and submarines routinely deploy to the Indian Ocean. ...

...A study of our neighbour Pakistan shows that its Navy at one time had its principal warships named after the great Mughals from Babur to Aurangzeb, with the exception of Akbar the Great because of his liberal views on all religions. Incidentally, Indian warships are generally not named after historical figures, but after rivers, mountains, ports, weapons and islands. However, two Indian Navy shore establishments in Mumbai are named after famous admirals of the medieval period, viz INS Kunjali and INS Angre. ...

...The maiden voyage of the Titanic suffered from poor planning and implementation as it did not cater for the dangers of high-speed steaming in waters that had icebergs. Though not an economist, I venture to write this article on demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes (comprising 86.5 per cent of the currency in circulation), with a preamble that the people of India voted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to power with a clear mandate in 2014, and he has every right to take tough or difficult decisions. ...

...The Chinese Navy has been deployed in prolonged anti-piracy operations off Somalia since 2008. It has added conventional and nuclear submarines for such deployments though submarines have no role to play in anti-piracy operations. China has built and militarised seven artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea. It has improved its relations with the Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte with $20 billion in aid. The first of these relates to the Chinese-built Hambantota port in Sri Lanka, where China is now apparently going to control 80 per cent of the facility. It will have management control of this new strategically located deep-water port in India’s immediate neighbourhood. Wily and farsighted China has also built a massive international airport just 18 km from Hambantota port, named as Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport. ...
