...As the government knows the cost at which stents are imported into India or manufactured in India and the final price charged to patients, it cannot remain a bystander to the sometimes unjustified markups which occur as the stent moves from manufacturer to distributor to hospital to patient. No one is averse to reasonable markups, but profiteering must end. However, what seems to be a well-intended and beneficial measure may also be a minefield, because a stent is not a stent is not a stent. For this reason stent pricing must be negotiated cautiously if a positive end result is to be achieved for patients and the country. First, cost determines quality.
