...Little would he have imagined that one of his modes of protests would become a trendsetter in the state. On August 1, 2015, he climbed atop a telecom tower near Kanyakumari to take his slogan to a higher level. The 59-year-old died due to cardiac arrest while still atop the tower. His death stirred the masses. While the government continued to sell liquor, his mode of protest got firmly etched in public psyche. Since then such protests have become quite regular, if not the order of the day. Not only the causes have been varied – from failure in love to liquor prohibition to safeguarding interests of farmers and fishermen – the form of protest has been seen across the state — from Ooty to Kovilpatti to Rameswaram. Earlier, the mode of protest was climbing atop water tanks though the instances were not that frequent.
